Experimental Medicine, Nuffield Department of Medicine, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford
Grade 8: £37,012 - £44,166 p.a.
The Nuffield Department of Medicine (NDM) is developing information systems to support infection monitoring and control. These systems combine clinical and other information about patients with genetic information about bacteria and viruses to identify transmission networks. This is leading edge, disruptive technology, with the potential to change the way in which infections are managed in hospitals, in care homes and across the whole of the health economy. It is also representative of the kind of technology being developed by Medical Sciences Division of the University, in collaboration with the Departments of Engineering and Computer Science.
NDM wishes to appoint a software engineer to work on a specific aspect of this development, in connection with the UK Modernising Medical Microbiology project (see http://www.modmedmicro.ac.uk/). You will work with colleagues to integrate clinical and genetic data, supporting the secure transmission, automatic analysis and visualisation of the information needed by front-line staff working in infection control. This appointment will be available up until 31 December 2013 in the first instance; however, the expectation is that new and exciting developments in this area will continue for the foreseeable future.
A degree in computer science or related field is essential, as is experience of software development in a business, professional or medical context together with a sound understanding of security principles and techniques. Effective communication skills will be needed, together with the ability to work effectively as part of a small team and a readiness to acquire new skills as the situation demands. Previous experience in the development of web and mobile applications, data visualisation and interface design and specific programming skills/technologies would be considered highly desirable.
The closing date for applications is noon on Friday 18 May 2012.
