The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in the use of large-scale sequencing, informatics and analysis of genetic variation. We use sequence data to further our understanding of infectious disease and generate resources of lasting value to biomedical research.
We have an exciting position available for an experienced PERL web developer to work as part of the Sanger Institute Core Software Services Team. The Institute has many and varied biological and sequencing pipelines that depend upon core software repositories, database and web service provision. These resources are used by both Genome Campus scientific staff and external scientific researchers via our public websites.
The role is to support the Sanger Institute's Core-Bioinformatics services, satisfying current and future requirements for scientific software and databases. To achieve this the role encompasses a number of areas:-
- develop and maintain specialized sequence resources and the maintenance of project-specific data
- support for Institute staff both in terms of assistance and training
- contribute to ongoing integration of Core-Bioinformatics resources into the main internal and external Sanger Institute websites
- provision of webservices and scripts for Core-Bioinformatic resources
- extension of Sanger Institute hosted Blast database provision with a view to extend the functionality and features of Blast services
- develop a Blast webservice
- provide access to external biological resources through the acquisition and mirroring of complex biological databases by the provision of user friendly interfaces.
- ensure the Sanger Institute's suite of Core-Bioinformatics tools reflect new trends in functionality and biomedical research
Essential Skills
- Modern OO PERL programming language in a linux/unix environment
- HTML, CSS, Javascript, AJAX, JSON, jQuery
- SQL especially MySQL
Ideal Skills
- Version control - SVN and git
- Bash scripting
- JQuery
- An understanding of bioinformatics and BioPerl
