Web Application Specialist

Post Status: One year Contract

Location: Main Campus

Salary: Appointment will be made on the Administrative III salary scale at a point in line with current pay policy

Reports To: HPRC Manager

Post Summary

High Performance and Research Computing (HPRC) provides large-scale super computing, data management and visualisation facilities for Trinity College Dublin, and through the eINIS project to the Irish computational research community. HPRC is a group within IS Services.

The Web Application Specialist, as part of the team in HPRC, will play a key role in developing and supporting web applications as part of existing and future research projects. The successful candidate will also be involved in research projects in diverse areas in College such as the Digital Humanities, and Biobanking. 

Principal Duties

Such tasks will include (but are not limited to):

  • Developing and maintaining web applications for research projects
  • Maintaining and upgrading the HPRC web site
  • Advise on best practice for future web projects
  • Developing and delivering relevant training material

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Qualifications and Experience

The applicant must have

  • A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Science, or suitable relevant experience
  • Additional IT professional qualifications would be advantageous.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong web programming skills with an emphasis on standards based development
  • Good knowledge of Java programming
  • Javascript and one or more of: PHP/Perl/Python/Ruby
  • Knowledge of a CMS (preferably Drupal)
  • Familiarity with Apache and Tomcat 
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience of database systems such as Mysql or Oracle would be advantageous
  • Knowledge of Fedora Commons or DSPACE would be advantageous
  • Ability to prioritise and plan work to meet deadlines
  • An ability to work under pressure to resolve problems quickly
  • Good analysis skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Good interpersonal skills - must be able to integrate with existing team
  • Flexible and adaptable person, with an ability and interest in developing new skills
  • Attention to detail and quality
  • Good team player
  • Flexible approach
