Credit Underwriting Supervisor Job Description
The Credit Underwriting Supervisor position is a United States based, 100% remote opportunity. The Supervisor will report to the Risk Operations Manager and will support the development of a new department, which will provide merchant credit card processing to qualified applicants. Additionally Supervisor will support underwriting functions and expert-level risk evaluation of the bank's new merchants of all sizes. Areas of managerial focus will include but is not limited to leading a team of credit underwriting analysts, performing risk management analysis and underwriting, assuring regulatory adherence, assisting with merchant monitoring and enforcement operation, and balancing the overall business impact of the bank's operations. In addition to supervising the underwriting team, the Supervisor will continuously evaluate information availability, information integrity, developing technologies, and merchant trends to ensure best in class long-term vetting and underwriting pra ctices. Success will be measured by the ability to support the Underwriting team of analysts and enable the merchant services business by optimizing revenue and minimizing losses. Performance will also be based on the ability to support and ensure the quality of underwriting decision-making and enforcement as viewed by regulators, processors, customers, and internal stakeholders.â¨The candidate is expected to become the subject matter expert for all the bank's vetting and underwriting operational processes, procedures and policies. Moreover, the candidate is required to become proficient in communicating and interacting with merchants directly and regularly. This position requires business acumen, creative thinking, exceptionally strong written and oral communication skills as well as exceptional project and team leadership skills.â¨
Required Experience: At least two years of merchant acquiring, prior risk management or commercial underwriting experience is re quired.⨠Large merchant processor experience a plus (First Data, etc). Do not apply without meeting this requirement.
Specific Duties:
â¨Training, development of merchant underwriting credit and risk policy, development and supervision of underwriting team;â¨Development of training documents for roll-out of new products, policies and/or procedures; Evaluate team performance including rewarding and disciplining employees based on their work quality and underwriting decision skills including coaching team members, addressing complaints and resolving problems;â¨Balance efficiency of credit underwriting team with expected quality of underwriting results;â¨Implementation and support of credit underwriting and procedures;â¨Assist in projects to develop recommendations for credit policy, underwriting protocols, risk mitigation strategy, acquisitions, new merchant programs, merchant trust and safety tools, and profitability/pricing;â¨Conduct full credit underwriting analyses including assessment of merchant risk including the bank's Acceptable Use, Federal and State Regulatory Compliance, Credit Card Complianc e, Legal, Fraud and Credit Risks. Underwrite merchants on a timely basis; present detailed recommendations to management, cross-functional risk management organization and merchant services business units; Interpret and analyze financial statements, credit bureau reports, merchant processing statements, business history, background investigations, bank and trade references. Calculate reserve/collateral requirements based on credit exposure;â¨Communicate directly with a wide range of the bank's teams both in Albuquerque, Dallas and Washington DC, merchants and vendors during credit underwriting process in a professional manner. Ensure that issues are escalated properly to appropriate internal departments and management;â¨Establish and maintain accurate and thorough documentation on all systems, reporting, and analytical methodologies used within the department. Provide strong centralized information management for all risk areas and geographic regions to minimize redundanci es and coordinate efficient business execution;â¨Review, evaluate and design business processes, systems, and workflows to ensure adherence to approval criteria and maximize efficiencies;â¨Collaborate with product and technology to develop tools and processes to enhance efficiency of merchant underwriting policies and practices including new product development, marketing activities and related risk endeavors;â¨Establish strong relationships with other teams throughout the organization including international counterparts to leverage best practices, ensure excellent information flow and feedback on impacts of processes, policies and product changes;â¨â¨Special projects and duties.â¨â¨
Basic Minimum Qualificationsâ¨
One or more years of supervisory experience are preferred;⨠At least two years of merchant acquiring, prior risk management or commercial underwriting experience is required.⨠Large merchant processor experience a plus (First Data, etc). Customer communication experience in both phone and email support.â¨â¨, merchant vetting or commercial underwriting experience is required;â¨A minimum of two years business experience with increasing levels of responsibilities; Experience in financial services industry is required;â¨Direct experience in utilizing analytical skills to identify critical trends.
